TRAINING OVERVIEW
What is Oliver McGowan training?
The Oliver McGowan training is a mandatory learning program aimed at improving awareness, understanding, and care for people with learning disabilities and autism. This training helps health and social care staff build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support autistic people and people with a learning disability in a safe, respectful, and person-centred way. It focuses on the importance of communication, reasonable adjustments, and understanding the legal and professional responsibilities of staff.
The Health and Care Act 2022 made it a legal requirement for all CQC-registered health and social care providers in England to ensure staff are trained in learning disability and autism appropriate to their role.
It is designed to improve practice, reduce avoidable harm, and strengthen the quality-of-care people receive.
